Happy New Year, listeners! The Cinematic Schematic is kicking off this rotation around the sun by playing things differently with a 2024 sneak peek at the most anticipated movies playing in theaters later this year.
We kick things off with a quick recap of the final films we watched in 2023. We then take a look back at the box office predictions we made in our first episode of last year before hedging our bets on what will be the biggest hit of 2024.
To raise the stakes of the conversation, we conclude the show with the inaugural edition of “New Year Sneak Peek Movie Trivia.” Which host will emerge victorious with bragging rights?
Celebrating 2024 With Familiar Faces
Hosts Caleb Masters and Laron Chapman pop the bottle of champagne for our first episode of 2024 with regular guest host and The Cinematropolis contributor, Daniel Bokemper.
Our Final Viewings of 2023
It wouldn’t be the end of the year without a final holiday weekend crunch at the movies. Before diving into the box office numbers and our 2024 sneak peek, the crew recap the highlights of their 2023 holiday season selections.
Laron’s Selections
- The Color Purple
- Wonka
- Master Gardner
Daniel’s Selections
- Dream Scenario
- Godzilla Minus One
Caleb’s Selections
- Leave the World Behind
- The Mission
Closing the loop on our box office bets for 2023
Last year, we placed bets on which film would be the biggest of the year.
- Daniel Bokemper bet on Dune Part 2, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
- Caleb Masters bet on the Super Mario Bros. Movie, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
- Laron Chapman emerged the winner, betting on Barbie as his top choice of the year.
Thanks to unexpected hits like Barbie, and Oppenheimer, the domestic box office raked in just over $9 billion in 2023, marking a significant rebound since theaters across the country were shut down due to the pandemic. Doesn’t that signal an even better 2024? Not quite
Analysts and studio executives are not expecting a similarly triumphant improvement in 2024. We’ll begin feeling the impact of the strikes over the next several months, with this year targeting 107 wide releases versus 2023’s 124. Analysts are expecting the box office in 2024 to come in at least $1 billion under 2023’s gross.
Luckily, next year is shaping up with several long-awaited franchise hits, highly anticipated indies, and potentially even a few surprises for moviegoers. Which host will win the 2024 box office bet? Tune in throughout the year for more updates.
Our Most Anticipated Movies of 2024
Whether it’s returning to the deserts of Arrakis in Dune Part 2, diving back into the mind of a growing child in Inside Out 2, or checking on Oscar-winning director Bong Joon-ho‘s new film Mickey 17, there is no shortage of big-screen stories to get excited about this year. Did we mention we’re getting the long-awaited prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa?
It’s Time to Play a Game
In this inaugural edition of our sneak peek episode, we host trivia for the upcoming year in movies to see how much each host knows what’s in store and to give you(the listener) a sneak peek at what’s in store for you at the cinema.
The Rules:
- A final round will follow 15 questions. Each correct answer is worth a point.
- Contestants will buzz in to answer. Each contestant gets 3 clues for the full game:
- An Actor/Actress from the movie
- Genre
- Director
- In the final round, you can wager your points, and correct answers will be rewarded with double the number of points wagered.
- The winner gets bragging rights and also hosts the trivia in 2025 (or nominates a person to host in their place)
Tune in to find out which host knows the most about the upcoming movies of 2024!
