The Cinematic Schematic concludes this season by counting down The Cinematropolis’s top 5 movies of 2024.
Hosts Caleb Masters and Laron Chapman continue the annual tradition of counting down our top 5 films of the year with GoodTrash Media’s Dalton Stuart and The Cinematropolis contributor Daniel Bokemper.
We start the show by discussing the most notable movie news and notable trends of the year. We then give out our honorary awards. In our final segment, each host announces their top 5 movies of the year.
The Top News Story of 2024
Time Stamp: 3:52
2024 was the first fully post-COVID, post-strike year since 2019, though the impacts of the latter were undeniable on the box office and release schedule. According to Deadline, “2024 came in at an estimated $8.72 billion, -3% from 2023’s $9 billion.”
In short, the strikes slowed down and marginally decreased the box office rebound from COVID, with sequels being the real winner, making up 14 of the top 15 highest-grossing movies of 2024. 569 movies were released in the United States and Canada, up from 506 in the previous year, but still down from 792 titles released in 2019.
A few of the most notable movie news stories of 2024:
- Oppenheimer swept the 2024 Oscars
- Robert Downey Jr. announces return to the MCU
- Blade continues to ice skate downhill
- “Glicked” is a box office smash
- Popcorn buckets make a comeback

2024 was full of twists and turns at the movies. Whether it was surprising hits like Longlegs or It Ends with Us, head-scratching passion projects like Megalopolis and Horizon: An American Saga, or massive critical flops like Joker: Folie à Deux or Madame Web, there were more 2024 movies to recognize for one reason or another.

The Cinematropolis Top 5 Movies of 2024
Time Stamp: 1:54:03
2024 was a less certain year for studio executives and audiences. The year often struggled to find the right rhythm. It was mostly quiet at the theaters until Dune: Part Two took the theaters by storm in March, grossing $282.1 million domestically and a total of $714.4 million worldwide. The spring delivered the gems, from Love Lies Bleeding to Abigail, I Saw the TV Glow, and eventually Challengers.
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and The Fall Guy flopped dramatically in May, leaving audiences wanting for a hit. The summer audiences decided to start the blockbuster season late with Inside Out 2 smashing records left in right in June. Twisters was the surprise talk of July until Deadpool & Wolverine showed up to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie in history. Alien: Romulus ended the summer with a familiar remix of the franchise’s greatest hits.
The holiday season concluded the year with a series of bigger-than-expected hits like Wicked, Gladiator II, and Moana 2, alongside awards contenders like Anora, A Real Pain, Conclave, The Brutalist, and A Complete Unknown.
There are many films to be considered, but what are our top 5 movies of 2024?
