The Oklahoma Film Critics Circle (OFCC) announced its 17th annual slate of award winners, with Everything Everywhere All At Once easily taking the title for Best Film of 2022 in a year full of top-tier cinema.
“Everything Everywhere All At Once lived up to its title. Not only was it named the OFCC’s Best Film by a landslide, but the film held multi-category appeal to members, triumphing by both slim and wide margins in a highly competitive film season,” said Jeff Huston, OFCC president.
Though the number of theatrical releases in 2022 was still down compared to pre-pandemic levels, the Oklahoma Film Critics Circle recognized a strong selection of feature films released both on streaming platforms and exclusively in theaters last year. In addition to Everything Everywhere All At Once, the top 10 films of 2022 are The Fabelmans, Top Gun: Maverick, TÁR, Glass Onion, Babylon, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, Pearl, The Banshees of Inisherin, and RRR.
“Our pick for the Best Film of 2022, Everything Everywhere All At Once, along with other theatrical-only best film contenders like Top Gun: Maverick and RRR, represent the continued commitment to larger-scale stories that can only be fully experienced on the big screen to meet the audience demand,” said Caleb Masters, OFCC vice president. “We also saw many personal passion projects from top-tier directors like Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, Damien Chazelle’s Babylon, and Ti West’s Pearl, resonate with Oklahoma film critics.”
From blockbuster films like Top Gun: Maverick to the global success of the non-English Indian film RRR, the 2022 film calendar was full of titles with broad appeal. Polarization was inevitable, with examples like Babylon providing satisfaction and disappointment to OFCC members, film Twitter, and audiences alike. In review, 2022 provided a degree of optimism to an industry reshaped by the pandemic and changed viewing patterns through a collision of box office success and critical reception.
The OFCC includes Oklahoma-based professional film journalists, academics, and critics in broadcast, print, and digital media. Two members of The Cinematropolis team, Caleb Masters and Daniel Bokemper, participated in this year’s awards voting.
