Writer/director Kevin Smith fans celebrate! In this special bonus episode of The Cinematic Schematic, we sit down with one of Oklahoma City’s great comic duos, The Martin Duprass, to talk about their fan remake of Dogma, and how they approached making their version of the movie, DawgMuh: As We Remember It, entirely from memory.
It is fair to say that Dogma(1999) is one of writer/director Kevin Smith’s most beloved movies by his fans. It not only features an all-star cast composed of Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Salma Hayek, Alan Rickman, Jason Lee, and many others, but it explores a familiar topic of Smith’s following: zealotry. Unfortunately, the film has been unavailable on streaming or bluray/4K bluray for several years due to a rights ownership issue with the producers, Bob and Harvey Weinstein.
Despite various protests and offers from Smith to obtain the streaming and physical media rights from the Weinstens, the duo “scoffed” at the idea. Smith went on to say “My movie about angels is owned by the devil himself.”
The Martin Duprass, AKA Oklahoma City’s Lauren Thomas-Martin, and Jeremy Martin discovered the accessibility challenges over dinner with a friend, Jacob Threadgill, and his wife, which sparked creative inspiration. Since the film is not accessible, what if we remade the movie? And since there is no easy way to watch the film, what if we remade it based on how we remember it?
That is how DawgMuh: As We Remember It was born.
In this exclusive episode of The Cinematic Schematic, we talk with Martin Duprass about how they adapted their idea to the page from memory and recruited several of OKC’s most applauded comedians to join the cast of their fan remake.
